Here are some links
to some specific, interesting, eclectic (and rich!) resources
of this
region both within the Barn's immediate environs and through
out the mid-Hudson Valley.
•
Immediate Environs — Tivoli Landing
|
The Hudson River is a 20 minute walk, 10 minute car ride,
turn right from the Barn, and continue straight down through
the Village of Tivoli and you will run right into the River.
Cross the railroad tracks and you may sit here, enjoy a
stunning view of the Catskills, a good place to
take in the sunset, put your kayak in. |
|
This neck of
the woods is blessed with a trail system that runs all
along the river with good views, waterfalls, creeks (known
as "kills" in Dutch).
Tivoli Bays is a 10 minute drive from
the Barn and puts you at the trail head of 1700 acres
of hiking, ruin observation, peninsulas with stunning
river views. |

The Hudson River Valley is renowned
for its ever-burgeoning commitment to local produce and
cuisine....
And there are a plethora of good
restaurants, farmer's markets, CSA's (community supported
agriculture), farm stands, festivals and cottage food
industries... from chocolate to wine, maple syrup, wild
crafted herbs, heirloom vegetables, breads, pick your
own...so it is impossible to list it all.
Here then is sampler of what is right
close to the Barn. |
Debra's Famous Banana Creme Pie |
|
• Luna

My most favorite and regular eating spot
in Tivoli. Debra Maisel's totally vegan desserts are true
mouth-gasms, oh! the banana créme pie. The noodle
pot is scrumptious, filling and delicate in flavor. I
send everybody who stays at the Barn here and no one comes
back disappointed!

Where
to go food shopping locally...
In Red Hook, 10 minutes from the
Barn, you will find:
An IGA and a
Hannaford, Sipperly's Grog Shop and Red Hook Natural Foods.
Directions to Red Hook from Tivoli:
- Turn left out of the Barn driveway onto Broadway
- Turn Right onto 9G
- Continue on 9G, pass Bard College on your right
- At second light, turn left onto 199, Montgomery Place
Farm stand on your right
- Continue up hill, take note of rolling landscape on
your left
- See Hardemann's Farm Stand on your left
- Continue into "four corners" of Red Hook
- IGA & Liquor store are left onto North Broadway
- Red Hook Natural Foods & Hannafords are on South
Broadway, to your right
Adam's
Fairacre Farms
The supermarket of choice around here is Adams, just across
the Kingston/Rhinecliff Bridge, (15 mintues) with huge
amount of produce and specialty products...kind of like
a Hudson Valley Fairway Foods. |
Farms,
Markets & Farm Stands
Locally grown produce all with-in ten minutes
of the Barn... |
•
Montgomery
Place
(Go South on 9g coming from Tivoli, on the right
just past Bard College)
This is my favorite farm stand...unbelievable apples,
many varieties, peaches, berries, corn, local veggies..it
always feels like a beehive of activity at their
stand. You can feel Doug and Talea Fincke's 21 years
of attention and care bursting from every bite.
•
Migiorelli's
(Take 3rd right, going South on 9G from Tivoli
onto Annandale Rd by two huge stop signs, continue
thru Bard College until stop light at 199....farm
stand on your left)
Another great option with locally grown produce
corn, tomatoes, squash...and pickles, pies. cheese.
• Greig
Farms Pick-Your-Own
I spent one winter pruning the blueberry bushes
at Greig's... that's just one crop you can harvest
yourself at Greig's. And while you are there, be
sure to visit the KOI POND behind Grandiflora nursery...
and feed them (food provided)... you will be thrilled
with a huge thrashing rush of gold, black and white...
Kids will love this!
• Hardemann's
Farm Stand
(Going South on 9G, turn left at second stop
light onto 199 going into Red Hook, Hardemann's
on left at bottom of hill)
Famous for its cider...and cider doughnuts, a regional
speciality; indian corn, peanut brittle, hot cider...
local meat products.
Farmer's
Markets
The closest farm markets to Tivoli that
I frequent are in Kingston (20
minutes away across the River) and Rhinebeck
(15 minutes). They are great sharings of local produce
and products of all sorts, often with live music
and other events going on.
Here is link to a complete list of regional farm
markets and pick your own spots, Edible
Hudson Valley....also a great magazine to check
out for more in depth reporting about The Hudson
Valley's food. |

Cheap
Eats
• Holy
Cow
Simply the best deal on ice cream you will find, all
delivered in quick bustle by powder-blue uniformed ladies
who always ask if you want that with whipped cream and
a cherry. They are the first establishment in the shopping
center next to the M&T Bank, across from the Regal
Cinemas. Great spot for Summer people-watching, the line
is out the door all year round, and they are open late!
7270 S Broadway # 1
Red Hook, NY 12571-1658
(845) 758-5959
• Lucy's
Tacos
Great lunch pit stop....fresh and delicious ingredients
(a far cry from taco bell)
8 E Market St
Red Hook, NY 12571-1411
(845) 758-8055
• Uncle
Chippie's Burger Shop
I have a weakness for "sliders"... those
small, three bite size burgers, dripping with fried onions
& pickles... only at Chip's, you can get them with
local beef or turkey... slathered with his special sauce...
yum! Chip is also a great guy and I always feel my positive
energy rise when I go to his "sock hop" style
spot.
Old Farm Rd. & Rte. 9

• LA
MEXICANA
19 W. Market St. (between Rte. 9 & St. John St.)

There is a large Mexican community in the Hudson River
Valley and this is one of the place's they eat....try
the chile rellenos!
• BARD
COLLEGE COFFEE SHOP
The Bard College campus is worthy of much exploration,
turn in on the road North of the Bard Chapel and Bard
Hall. The coffee shop is in the Bard College Student Center,
the large beige building also has a movie theatre and
multi-purpose room. The grill seems to be in operation
at all hours... food is good and cheap... play pool while
you're at it... |

Northwind
Farms
So you want a chicken like you've never tasted before?....or
beef, pork, maybe a rabbit?.....where you actually can see
and know where it was raised? North Wind Farm is right down
road from my property (turn left onto Broadway, go straight
across 9G onto Kerley's Corners Rd, shortly see alot of
animals on your left). You can drive right in and buy a
bird. Tell the owners, Dick and Jane that Kathleen sent
you...I worked for them during one Thanksgiving season...if
you want more details, ask me... not exactly for the faint
of heart! Lucky's
Chocolates
Rae Stang, the most renowned and inventive chocolatier of
the Hudson Valley, has created a very fun store to explore
and eat in... the plethora of chocolate products, offered
in an extraordinary array of designs, blends and graphic
visuals is like being in a interactive chocolate musuem.
This is a good place to stop after a day exploring Woodstock...
Lyonsville
Maple Syrup
If you feel like venturing across the River and its early
spring, this sugar house is in full swing. They end their
sap season with a big community pancake breakfast... great
syrup, of course, for purchase any time...
Additional Local Resources and other Connections to Kathleen's
Barn— to appear here soon. |
